For upper grades 4-6, the school assemblies are NOT the same as lower grades PreK to 3. Each session has multi-media presentations with music, videos and behind-the scenes with STEM learning beyond literacy. Children’s author Lisa Caprelli revealed her inspirational path from a shy young girl to a successful writer who now travels city by city, visiting elementary schools to promote a message of self-love and acceptance in a recent ABC 7 AUTHOR VISITS interview in El Paso, Texas. She travels from school to school nationwide.
Currently based out of Southern California, traveling the world, Lisa is born and raised in El Paso, Texas. Caprelli has published over 23 books, most notably the hit Unicorn Jazz series. Along with her varied group of animal pals, her tales center on a special unicorn with a musical note for a tail who negotiates the difficulties of embracing her differences. Reflecting Caprelli’s own life events of having people believe in her, beginning with her grandmother, Wolf the Crow is a constant friend in her stories who believes in Unicorn Jazz.
Caprelli interacts with students during her school assembly visits. Librarians and teachers have seen how young readers connect with her characters and themes long after her presentations.
How much does an author visit cost (honorarium)?
Honorarium varies depending on program length, the number of assemblies, and travel expenses. Discounts are available for Title I and multi-assembly days, and virtual rates are lower. Please request a custom quote using the form on this page.
How long is each assembly?
Typical assemblies run 30–45 minutes, with 5–10 minutes reserved for Q&A. The timing can be adjusted according to grade level and schedule.
What are the tech requirements?
Projector or large display with HDMI input, speakers, and a microphone (handheld or headset). Please provide a small table near the stage and power access.
Virtual: Zoom/Google Meet with host screen-share enabled.
Which grades do you serve?
Designed for Pre K–6; adaptable and middle and high schools (mental health journals and behind the scenes of an author.) Family literacy night events and teacher PD add-ons are available.

Lisa Caprelli is an author with a degree in Social Psychology. She has studied human behavior and communication for over 25 years. She is host of Unicorn Jazz "The THING I Do" kids show. Originally from El Paso, Texas, Caprelli currently resides in Orange County, California. She has published over 21 books and has 6 books forthcoming by 2025 in English and Spanish perfect for the Bilingual students also. Her fiction and non-fiction books are for children of all ages, including the child in all of us! Caprelli has original activity and curriculum guides for teachers and parents seeking to integrate the lessons from her stories for students, librarians, educators, counselors, principals and parents.
School Author Visit Review, Created Assembly Style for the Entire School — Grades TK-6:
Ms. Caprelli showed up for an author visit at our school first thing all smiles and hugs with a life size Unicorn Jazz in tow. She set up in our library with Jazz and tons of activities and extras for teachers. All of our kindergarteners squealed with delight and were truly in awe. Lisa shared her story about how she and her team came to create the Unicorn Jazz book. She read them Bee-ing Happy Book and truly engaged every student about what the characters and scenes in each page meant to her.
We had a writers workshop with 5th graders next. She shared her book and explained how to use the writing template she provided. They were all so inspired and excited to collaborate and then share in small groups, their own stories in a speed writing session. We moved on to an assembly with our 2nd thru 4th graders, approximately 230 students.
She shared with them the Unicorn Jazz friendship song. Everyone danced, clapped, high-fived and sang along. We were then treated to a sneak peek of her newest book Eye See You. Everyone was overjoyed and can’t wait for its release! After that we moved on to a group of our 1st graders who were again in awe of Ms. Caprelli and giant Jazz. We ate lunch in the library with several of my library helpers. She got to know them a bit, even took the time to listen to a short story one of them created about Jazz. She had another wonderful reading & singing session with more kinder and TK students. We had one more exciting writers workshop with more 5th graders. Then sadly we had to say goodbye. All along the way she was posing for pictures for and with us: Signing books, cards and notebooks for anyone who asked. She smiled all through the ambitious day I scheduled for us.
She is such a humble and kind soul. We were all Unicorn Jazz fans before she came, but she made this a day that anyone who met her will not soon forget!
