This book is far more than a story—it’s a tribute, a celebration, and the next chapter of a dream set in motion years ago. In 2021, I shared my boldest hopes with a Hollywood writer: to expand the Unicorn Jazz universe, bring our characters to the screen, and let them soar through licensing and animation. From that moment, my cousin— the late, irreplaceable Davey Villalobos—poured his boundless heart and humor into every illustration, infusing each page with color, culture, and joy.

Together, we imagined a tale that would spark wonder in children everywhere. The Flying Taco™ is that shared vision made real—a legacy of creativity and love that carries Davey’s spirit forward and invites young readers to dream right alongside us.

Together with my family—Davey, Matthew and Suzanne—and with the incredible artistic gift of my cousin Davey Villalobos, we brought this dream to life.

After that meeting, Davey and I started brainstorming. And that’s when it happened—he sketched a silly, magical, flying fairy taco.

We laughed. We dreamed. And we knew we had something special.

That spark became The Flying Taco™, named after my mom Esperanza, whose name means hope. Now, Hope takes readers on a whirlwind journey across six continents, bringing joy, culture, and kindness to kids everywhere—with special pages devoted to California and Texas, the places I call home.

This book is my heart. It’s our legacy. And it’s for every child with a big dream and a bigger imagination.

I named The Flying Taco after my sweet mama, Esperanza—her name means “hope,” and she has always been my greatest inspiration.

Through this book, I invite you to dream, imagine, and travel the world with Hope as she embarks on a whirlwind adventure across six continents—starting in the USA, with special love poured into the pages that celebrate California, where I now live.

This book is deeply personal to me. It’s more than a story—it’s a tribute. My talented illustrator and cousin, Davey Villalobos, poured his heart into the artwork. Tragically, Davey passed away suddenly in December. Sharing this book now feels like a sacred honor—one that allows me to carry on our shared vision and keep his vibrant creativity alive for generations of children to enjoy.

Four family members from El Paso, Texas, came together to bring this book to life. Meet the team behind this special book:

Lisa Caprelli – Passionate about leaving a legacy for future generations, Lisa shares the love and joy of storytelling and music with children. As the author of 23 books in English and Spanish, including the beloved Unicorn Jazz and In His Image series, she inspires positive messages that spark imagination, creativity, and hope.

Matthew Vasquez, RN – A dedicated nurse with a heart of gold, Matthew brings compassion, inspiration, and humor to every project. As the puppeteer of Trezekke the Zebracorn, a speaker, and co-author, he helped shape this adventure with his storytelling. Beyond writing, he also handled the book’s design, graphic layout, cover art, and binding—bringing The Flying Taco to life from start to finish.

Suzanne Funk, M.Ed. – An Early Childhood Specialist, devoted wife, and dedicated mother. After years of shaping young minds in the classroom, Suzanne embarked on a new journey in the world of barbecue. As the founder and co-owner of Desert Oak BBQ, she combines her love for family, community, and authentic flavors, creating a welcoming space where great food and hospitality come together.

Davey Villalobos – The brilliant artist behind our books, Davey brought our adventures to life with vibrant illustrations that leap off every page. Drawing was his passion from the moment he could hold a crayon, and his incredible talent continues to inspire readers everywhere. His art and legacy live on in every story.

Together, we created this book to inspire the child in all of us to explore, learn, and celebrate the flavors and cultures of the world!
