Mental Health Month 2025 for Teachers and Parents
🌟 Week 1 (May 1–7): Feeling Seen & Understood
May 1
Kick off Mental Health Month by checking in with your child. Ask how they feel today and encourage them to draw their emotions. Display or discuss their artwork—let them know every feeling is welcome here.
May 2
Encourage movement & play. Host a mini dance party (cue the Unicorn Jazz Friendship Song!), or lead a 5-minute stretch break. Showing joy in moving our bodies teaches kids that exercise is fun and stress-relieving.
May 3
Create a feelings-friendly space. Introduce a chart of simple emoji faces or feeling words. Help your child pick one emotion they felt today and share why. Normalizing this conversation removes any shame around big feelings.
May 4
Make time for storytelling. Read a Unicorn Jazz tale (or any story about kindness and emotions). Then ask, “How do you think the character felt when…?”—sparking empathy and emotional literacy.
May 5
Encourage kindness in social settings. Challenge your child or class to perform one random act of kindness—helping a classmate, a compliment, or sharing a snack. Later, celebrate their generosity to reinforce positive behavior.
May 6
Model positive self-talk. Share one thing you’re proud of (“I’m proud I cooked dinner today”) and invite your child to mirror you with “I am ___!” statements. Loving ourselves openly teaches self-compassion.
May 7
Prioritize a soothing sleep routine. Establish a calming bedtime ritual—warm bath, gentle Unicorn Jazz story, dim lights. Explain that good sleep helps us feel happier and more balanced tomorrow.
🌼 Week 2 (May 8–14): Gratitude, Creativity & Calm
May 8
Practice gratitude together. At mealtime or during quiet time, ask each child to name one or two things they’re thankful for. Start a “gratitude jar” where everyone adds daily notes.
May 9
Nurture creativity. Set up an art station—crayons, paints, paper—and invite children to draw what makes their hearts sing. Display their masterpieces as proud reminders of self-expression.
May 10
Get outside & explore. Take a nature walk—listen for birds, feel the breeze, watch the clouds. Simple moments in nature bring calm and open up meaningful chats.
May 11 (Mother’s Day)
Honor a mother or caregiver. Parents: encourage a hug or a handmade card. Teachers: have students create thank-you notes for the important women in their lives.
May 12
Teach kindness through service. Bake cookies for a neighbor, pick up litter, or gather toys to donate. Compassion in action builds confidence and empathy.
May 13
Introduce a calming technique. Practice “smell the flower, blow the candle” deep-breathing together. Teach kids this tool for moments when feelings run high.
May 14
Encourage trying new things. Offer a “bravery challenge”—new food, game, or craft. Praise curiosity over perfection: every experiment is a win.
🌈 Week 3 (May 15–21): Confidence, Comfort & Connection
May 15
Celebrate unique talents. Host a quick “share your superpower” moment—dance, draw, joke, or song. Highlight how Trezekke the Zebracorn shines by sharing his gifts.
May 16
Create a “calm corner.” Design a cozy nook with pillows, books, and a favorite plush Unicorn Jazz friend. This becomes a go-to spot when big feelings bubble up.
May 17
Lean on animal friends. Spend time with a pet or a beloved stuffed animal. Cuddles and gentle play remind children they’re never alone.
May 18
Emphasize healthy body, healthy mind. Prepare a colorful snack together—apple slices, carrots, water. Talk about how nourishing our bodies supports our feelings too.
May 19
Nurture connections. Encourage your child to call a grandparent or send a drawing to a cousin. Strengthening relationships fosters belonging and joy.
May 20
Teach mistakes as lessons. When things go awry, reflect together: “What did we learn?” Modeling humor and patience around errors builds resilience.
May 21
Infuse laughter. Share a silly joke or have a giggle contest. Even Bee Happy, Unicorn Jazz’s cheerful bee, knows that laughter is wonderful emotional medicine.
🌻 Week 4 (May 22–28): Mindfulness, Music & Empathy
May 22
Bond through creativity. Take a 10-minute break to doodle, color, or write a short poem. Making art together can ground and connect you.
May 23
Encourage quiet reflection. Sit with paper and crayons, let kids draw their thoughts. If they choose, invite them to share what their picture means.
May 24
Help children appreciate helpers. Craft thank-you notes for teachers, bus drivers, or coaches. Teaching gratitude for others builds empathy.
May 25
Engage with the community. Attend a local storytime or park playdate as a family or class. New social experiences help kids grow their confidence.
May 26 (Memorial Day)
Share the meaning of the day. Tell a simple story of service, then draw flags or make “thank you” art for heroes who protect our community.
May 27
Inspire imaginative play. Join your child’s pretend-play world—be a unicorn, an explorer, a friendly monster. Imagination is a powerful outlet for feelings.
May 28
Model active listening. Ask, “How was your day?” and truly listen—nod, make eye contact, repeat back. This teaches children that their voices matter.
🌷 Week 5 (May 29–31): Self-Care Rituals & Celebration
May 29
Allow a favorite self-care activity. Free drawing, building blocks, or a backyard game—permission to enjoy what brings joy recharges everyone.
May 30
Teach a “let-go” ritual. Have kids write or draw a worry, then crumple it up and say goodbye. Empowering them to let go of stress gives control back to their hearts and minds.
May 31
Celebrate the month’s journey. Reflect on favorite moments: “What did we learn about our feelings?” Reward effort with a small celebration—storytime, game night, or simply a big hug.
