Growing up in the desert of El Paso, Texas, I never saw the ocean until I was 17. But that didn’t stop me from dreaming about it. I used to watch Fantasy Island and imagine what it would be like to see a blue ocean. Even though I grew up far from the sea, my love for the ocean grew stronger. Looking back at my humble beginnings, I’m grateful for the wisdom and support my family and teachers gave me, and it brings me so much joy to be able to share that with others, especially through my love for the ocean.

At a recent author visit, a student asked, “Why is the ocean important to us all?”

My answer: The Earth is made up of two-thirds water, from our oceans. Therefore, marine life matters to us all! The ocean is super important to us because it gives us the air we breathe, helps control the weather, and is home to so many amazing animals! From tiny fish to giant whales, the ocean is full of life. It’s like a big, blue heart that keeps the Earth healthy and happy. The ocean also gives us food, fun places to swim, and beautiful views. Taking care of the ocean means we’re helping our planet stay healthy for everyone, including all the cool creatures that live in the sea!

It’s this deep love and respect for the ocean that inspired me to write Ocean Animals—a book that invites both kids and adults to discover the beauty and importance of our oceans. Ocean Animals is not just a book; it’s an adventure that encourages readers to explore the incredible creatures that live beneath the waves.

Two songs we wrote and created music videos for the Ocean Animals book are:

1) Haiku Song (Because Ocean Animals is written in haiku on each page for each sea creature I teach about.) Kids can make their own Haiku poems and get the Ocean Animal Beyond the Book Activities here.

2) Ocean Animals – Kids love naming the sea creatures that appear! Whether you’re near the ocean or far away like I once was, I hope this book brings you closer to understanding and appreciating the importance of protecting our waters and the life they sustain.

The Ocean Animals Book for Kids with activities were designed to meet learning standards (CCSS and NGSS) such as:

  • Recognize common types of texts (e.g., storybooks, poems)
  • Explain major differences between poems, drama, and prose, and refer to the structural elements of poems (e.g., verse, rhythm, meter)
  • Describe how words and phrases (e.g., regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song
  • Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events
  • Use a model to represent the relationship between the needs of different plants and animals and the places they live. Living things need water, air, and resources from the land, and they live in places that have the things they need.
